Since the Polish-Russian War, known as the Polish Uprising of 1931, Lithuanians have been leaving crosses, crucifixes, rosary beads, and small statues on a small hill n Siauliai that has been a pilgrimage site, recently blessed by the Pope. The practice started when Lithuanians joined the Poles in the fight against Russia, and the bodies of Lithuanian soldiers were not returned to their homeland. To remember the soldiers, Lithuanians began leaving the religious objects on the hill to commemorate their loved ones. Even though this practice was prohibited by Russia through the years, citizens continued the practice. It is open to the public.
As of today, the number of crosses on the hill are estimated to be between 50,000 and 100,000 crosses.
