Lovelock's Gaia, 2023

240" x 19"

Paper postage stamps, silk thread, cotton, linen

The Greek goddess Gaia is often referred to as Earth Mother. The late scientist and environmentalist James Lovelock, introduced the Giaia Hypothesis in the 1960s, describing the Earth as a self-regulating being. Lovelock used it to argue for interventions to maintain planet harmony in the face of pollution and climate uncertainty.

The stamps in this piece are international. They celebrate plants, animals, water, health and the environment, with some warnings.

The horizontal structure of this piece was inspired by the tapestry of Bayeux, depicting the conquest of Normandy over England. That tapestry is 230 feet long and 20 inches high. The long format allows the viewer to engage directly with the stamps in this piece.
